IndiGo, India’s leading airline, has announced a temporary halt to its flights on the Mumbai-Manchester route starting August 31, 2026. The airline attributes this suspension to persistent airspace restrictions, lengthened flight durations, and escalating operational costs. These challenges are part of broader issues plaguing the global aviation industry, such as geopolitical tensions, increased fuel prices, and disruptions in various flight routes, all of which have made long-haul operations more costly.
In light of these difficulties, IndiGo plans to return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. These aircraft were initially procured in early 2025 to support the airline’s expansion into European markets before the delivery of its own Airbus A350 fleet. Despite the suspension of the Manchester route, IndiGo assures that its other long-distance international services will continue uninterrupted.
The airline has experienced strong demand for its European routes, which have played a crucial role in establishing IndiGo’s footprint in significant international markets. Nonetheless, the combination of extended flight times due to airspace constraints, rising aviation turbine fuel prices, and volatile foreign exchange rates has rendered the Manchester route financially unsustainable. Abhijit Dasgupta, the Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management at IndiGo, expressed regret over the decision but emphasized its necessity given the current operational environment. He also highlighted the positive customer response to the route and reiterated the airline’s commitment to resuming services once conditions improve.
Further, IndiGo is actively seeking alternative avenues to maintain its partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways as it continues to pursue its long-term international expansion goals. Passengers impacted by this suspension will be informed in advance and provided with assistance, including alternative travel options or refunds when applicable.
