Starmer Finalizes India-UK Trade Agreement Prior to Stepping Down

In a significant diplomatic achievement, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, on the brink of his resignation, has successfully negotiated the long-anticipated India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). During a strategic meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit 2026, both leaders settled on July 15 as the date for implementing the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This landmark agreement is poised to substantially enhance the economic relationship between the two nations, which currently conduct about £48 billion in annual trade.

Throughout his tenure, Starmer has been a staunch advocate for deepening ties with India, prioritizing the trade deal as a key goal for his administration. He has pointed to India’s growing clout in the global economy and emphasized the mutual benefits of streamlining trade processes between the UK and India. Starmer’s pursuit of this agreement underscores his broader vision for economic growth through international collaboration.

Starmer’s political journey saw him at the helm of the Labour Party following its defeat in the 2019 elections, after which he focused on repairing and strengthening connections with the British Indian community. His leadership saw Labour commit to increased cooperation with India across various sectors, including trade, security, education, technology, and climate initiatives. This approach aligned with his broader strategy to position the UK as a key partner in India’s economic ascent.

Having built a notable legal career, including his role as Director of Public Prosecutions, Starmer ascended to the role of Prime Minister after Labour’s sweeping victory in the 2024 elections. Despite initial accomplishments, such as stabilizing the economy and implementing domestic reforms, his tenure was marred by several policy challenges that eroded his political standing. These setbacks ultimately led to diminishing support within his party.

In a heartfelt resignation speech, Starmer conceded that he no longer had the backing of his parliamentary colleagues to lead Labour into the next election. Accepting their decision with dignity, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, marking the end of a notable chapter in the political landscape of the United Kingdom.
