Putin Sanctions TotalEnergies’ Divestment from Arctic LNG 2 Project in Russia.

In a significant development for the energy sector, Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the divestment of French firm TotalEnergies’ 10% stake in the Arctic LNG 2 project. Located in northern Siberia, this project is a crucial part of Russia’s liquefied natural gas ambitions. The stake will now be taken over by NordLine, a subsidiary of Novatek, Russia’s leading gas producer, which already commands a majority 60% share in the Arctic LNG 2 venture. Details regarding the financial terms of the acquisition have not been made public.

The Arctic LNG 2 project has encountered considerable obstacles following the imposition of U.S. sanctions in late 2023. In the wake of these sanctions, foreign partners, including TotalEnergies, halted their involvement. The French energy giant had previously reported substantial financial losses linked to its investments in Russia’s energy sector, which were exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Other international stakeholders in the project include Chinese energy companies and a Japanese consortium, each maintaining a 10% share. This transaction signifies a broader trend of Russia seeking to tighten its grip on key energy resources amid the continuing impact of international sanctions that limit foreign participation in its energy initiatives.

The Kremlin’s move also comes as European nations intensify their efforts to curtail Russian gas imports, posing further challenges for foreign investors in Russia’s LNG projects. Observers are closely monitoring the situation to gauge the future landscape of international investments in the Russian energy sphere.
