Contact lens wearers might think it’s harmless to doze off with their lenses in place, even if it’s just a quick nap. However, eye health professionals caution that this habit could substantially raise the risk of severe eye infections and enduring vision issues.

The cornea, which is the transparent front section of the eye, requires oxygen from the air to remain healthy. Contact lenses inherently reduce the amount of oxygen that reaches the cornea throughout the day. Wearing them while sleeping further restricts this oxygen supply, potentially compromising the eye’s natural defense barrier. This can make it easier for bacteria to invade, leading to infections.

A particularly serious issue associated with sleeping in contact lenses is microbial keratitis, an infection caused by bacteria affecting the cornea. If not addressed promptly, this condition can progress into a corneal ulcer, a painful sore that can leave permanent scars and lead to long-term vision impairment. Experts emphasize that even infrequent naps with lenses on can elevate this risk.

The good news is that these complications are mostly avoidable with proper lens care practices. Eye care experts advise removing contact lenses before sleeping or napping, maintaining strict hygiene with lenses, and adhering to the replacement schedule provided by your eye care specialist.

Individuals who notice symptoms such as redness in the eyes, discomfort, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, or sudden changes in sight should seek medical evaluation immediately. Early treatment can prevent severe damage and safeguard long-term vision. While contact lenses are generally safe when used correctly, sleeping in them unnecessarily heightens the risk of preventable eye issues.
