In a significant diplomatic move, Thailand and France have decided to upgrade their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership following discussions between Thai leader Anutin Charnvirakul and French President Emmanuel Macron. Their meeting in Paris, held at the Élysée Palace, centered around enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology. These talks also addressed regional issues, particularly developments in Cambodia and Myanmar.

The two nations have agreed to boost their collaboration in key industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. A notable point of discussion was France’s commitment to supporting the completion of the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement negotiations within the year. Originally initiated in 2013 but put on hold in 2014, these talks resumed in 2023, and Thai officials remain optimistic that the agreement will present significant economic opportunities for both Thailand and the EU.

Additionally, Thailand and France pledged to enhance their defense and cybersecurity ties, focusing on combating cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. On the regional front, Thailand reaffirmed its dedication to peacefully resolving border disputes with Cambodia, adhering to international law and dialogue frameworks.

As part of their bilateral efforts, the two governments announced plans to implement the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership for 2026-2028. This initiative is set to establish a formal strategic partnership between the countries. During his visit, Anutin also engaged with executives from prominent French companies such as Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group. These discussions aimed to attract further investment into Thailand’s high-tech and future-oriented industries.

French business leaders expressed confidence in Thailand’s conducive investment climate, with Airbus specifically confirming its intentions to expand aviation and engineering operations in the country. This mutual interest in fostering economic ties underscores the evolving relationship between Thailand and France, aiming for a stronger partnership in the coming years.
