The Carpathian region’s potential for enhanced cooperation and development took center stage as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky inaugurated the first Carpathian 8 Summit. This new regional forum, held in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast from September 18 to 20, has brought together leaders and officials from eight countries to foster collaboration in areas such as security, energy, and economic growth.
Gathering representatives from Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria, the summit aims to strengthen ties across the Carpathian region. Notable attendees included Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Romanian President Nicusor Dan, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, with Slovakia represented by a senior foreign ministry official. The discussions highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, especially in the context of Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to integrate more closely with Europe.
A significant aspect of the summit was the economic forum, which attracted around 500 business representatives. President Zelensky announced that investment agreements and projects worth over €1 billion are in the pipeline, underscoring the economic potential of the region. Nearly 100 projects from the participating countries were presented, showcasing the diverse opportunities for investment and development.
Transport and energy infrastructure emerged as key topics, with leaders focusing on improving regional mobility and enhancing trade and investment links. The summit also served as a platform for countries with varying stances on military assistance to Ukraine to engage in constructive dialogue, aiming to find common ground for future cooperation.
Poland reaffirmed its support for Ukraine, emphasizing the critical role of regional collaboration in addressing the challenges faced by the Carpathian countries. As the summit concludes, it is expected to lay the groundwork for stronger ties and coordinated efforts towards shared goals, including Ukraine’s path to European integration.
