In a significant shift in European air travel rankings, Istanbul Airport has surpassed Heathrow Airport as the busiest airport on the continent for the month of July. Istanbul Airport reported handling 8.15 million passengers during the month, while Heathrow managed 7.86 million. This change in rankings comes as a result of a 1.5% decline in passenger numbers at Heathrow compared to the same month last year, contrasted by a 2.3% increase in traffic at Istanbul Airport.
The decrease in Heathrow’s passenger numbers is partly attributed to disruptions related to conflicts in the Middle East, which have impacted travel patterns. This development has intensified discussions about the need for expansion at Heathrow, particularly the long-debated third runway. Currently operating with two runways nearing full capacity, Heathrow’s proposed £33 billion expansion plan aims to boost its annual capacity to around 150 million passengers, thus enhancing the UK’s international connectivity and economic activities.
Opened in 2018, Istanbul Airport benefits from a larger site and operates continuously around the clock. It boasts three runways, with plans for a fourth runway expected to be operational by the end of 2026. This infrastructure allows it to accommodate a higher number of passengers and positions it as a growing hub in international air travel.
While Heathrow faces these challenges, other UK airports are experiencing growth. London Stansted and Manchester airports both recorded their busiest-ever July, with 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively. These numbers highlight a broader trend of rising air travel within the UK, despite the setbacks at Heathrow.
